This lesson plan was created for 6th grade students to learn about climate change. It is designed specifically to challenge the students to think outside of the box and answer the challenging question of: How can we attempt to reverse the effects of climate change. This type of problem based learning lesson plan has loads of educational value for students. First off, this lesson plan helps develop skills in students to help them in our knowledge-based society: teamwork, problem solving, research gathering, etc. These skills are developed because students have to work step by step with other students to solve a tangible problem. Also, this lesson plan follows 6th grade standards surrounding not only Science, but English. This allows for students to improve their writing and presentation abilities in a Science class.
This lesson plan is designed for 3rd grade students to learn about the impact of having a good or bad digital footprint. In this lesson plan, students are required to research themselves online. Then, they play a board game that teaches them more about digital citizenship. Finally, the students are required to create a presentation over a researched celebrity. This lesson plan is valuable for the education of students. First off, it starts teaching how to be appropriate online to students at a young age. Hopefully by being introduced to something at a young age, it will be something that sticks with the students as they grow older. Also, in this lesson plan, the students are required to create a presentation, which also incorporates some English standards. So, not only will they be learning about how to be safe online, but they will also be learning how to improve their work ethic and research methods that could help them beyond this specific lesson.
This lesson plan is designed for 5th grade students to learn how to utilize an online tool called Scratch while writing a coherent story. First, the students are asked to navigate through Scratch. Then, they are asked to write a short story of their choosing. The students then have to make their story come to life through a Scratch animation. This computational thinking lesson plan is full of educational value. First off, it teaches the students how to code. By using Scratch, the students are using a step by step process to make their stories come to life. They may not know they are coding, but they are. Also, this lesson plan teaches students the steps for writing a successful story: beginning, middle, climax, and end. Even though this is a Computer Science lesson, students are still learning proper English writing skills. Finally, this lesson teaches students how to use technology and incorporate it into their daily lives.
For one of my ten badges, I decided to produce my own iMovie. I used play-doh to recreate the steps of mitosis, and then I put those steps into a mini video lesson. Allowing your students to create/produce their own projects helps them better understand what you are teaching them. If your student is able to make a video over mitosis after you teach it, then you as a teacher know that your student's level of understanding is high. There is even more educational value besides just showing level of understanding. It can also be used as a teaching tool by teachers or students. For teachers, they can create a video as another way to teach a lesson than just standing in front of the class and presenting information. For students, they can create a video to teach their fellow friends more about the subject. Production tools, especially creating an iMovie, should be utilized in every classroom. They are wonderful tools to increase the value of education.
For one of my ten badges, I decided to create an Edpuzzle video. The video is a Crash Course Biology episode over the function of animal cells. Embedded within the video are several questions and a few comments to ponder that will help engage the students while they watch the video. This website is truly valuable when it comes to teaching children. First off, it allows for the teacher to ask questions. This is highly valuable because it can be used as a tool to test the knowledge of students on a particular subject. Also, Edpuzzle allows for students to watch the educational video and answer the corresponding questions at their own pace and at their own time. Since each student in the classroom functions differently and works at different paces, this website is a wonderful tool for teachers to use to ensure students are catered to their specific needs.
