Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.
engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.
promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.
model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.
For the Inquiry Based Learning lesson plan, I worked with two others to come up with a lesson for our students and a driving question over how we can reverse the effects of climate change. Since we developed this lesson plan online through the use of a Google Doc, it shows that I can learn and collaboratively work with my colleagues in virtual environments. Also, since this lesson asks the students to answer a real life question about climate change, I am able to engage the students in exploring and trying to solve real-world issues using digital tools and resources. Finally, Inquiry Based lessons are designed to place students' ideas and observations at the center of their learning experience, so by creating this lesson I am promoting their innovative thinking and inventiveness by asking them to come up with a solution for climate change.
For one of my badges, I created a screencast using Quicktime Player on my laptop. This screencast went over a slideshow about the anatomy of the eye. In this screencast, I was using my own knowledge about the subject to help advance the learning of my students. Since this is a video, my students could easily watch it at home for a homework assignment, or they could watch it at home if they happen to be absent from school. This shows that as a teacher, I am fully capable of engaging in learning with my students in virtual environments.
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the ISTE-S. Teachers:
design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.
develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.
customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.
provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.
For one of my badges, I completed an hour of coding by playing a Disney Moana game. Attached is the link to the website I used to get my certificate of completion for completing the hour of code. By teaching code to my students, I am developing a learning experience that incorporates an online tool to promote my students' learning and creativity. Especially in the Moana game, students have to foster their creativity to get her across the ship so she can reach her goal. Finally, the hour of code allows students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in their learning. Code allows for active participation by the students because they have to come up with step by step instructions that get the job done, and if those instructions don't work the first time, they have to try all over again.
For one of my badges, I created an Edpuzzle video over animals cells. Embedded throughout the 8 minute video are several questions that assess the students' learning. Since it is a video that you can easily start and stop, it allows for students to work at their own pace. Since my student's can work at their own pace, I am developing a technology enriched environment that allows them to manage their own learning. Also, after I grade their responses to the questions, my students could look back on the video and assess their progress towards learning about animal cells. Finally, by having my class work on this video, I am customizing digital learning activities that are addressing each of my students' learning styles and working strategies.
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations.
collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.
communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats.
model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.
For one of my badges, I created a fake classroom on Edmodo. On the website, I posted announcements and other useful pieces of information to my imaginary students/parents. Since this is an online tool, I am able to successfully communicate relevant information, such as upcoming tests and open house fliers to my students and their parents using a digital media website. Also, Edmodo allows for student/teacher and parent/teacher relationships to form through the many way they can communicate on the website. So because of this, I am able to stay in the times of this digital society by collaborating with students and parents using the digital tool (Edmodo) and supporting my students' success in the classroom.
For one of my badges, I created a flyer about an open house that I would be hosting at my school. I used a website called Smore to organize my information in an effective manner. Since I plan to use this flyer as a form of communication between my students and their parents about the open house, I am effectively incorporating this standard. By doing this, I am able to use this digital tool to communicate relevant information and ideas to my students and their parents. Also, since I am using this tool to present information about my open house, I am exhibiting my own knowledge and skills to represent myself in a professional way online to anyone who looks at my flyer.
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:
advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.
address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.
promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.
develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools.
For one of my badges, I watched an hour long webinar over digital citizenship. During the webinar they talked about a program called "Be Internet Awesome." This campaign emphasizes how kids can be smart, alert, kind, and brave online. If I would show this webinar to my students, it would cover this standard listed above. First off, since this webinar covers about how to be smart, alert, kind, and brave online, it is promoting and modeling digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology. Also, this webinar helps to advocate and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information.
For the Digital Citizenship lesson plan, I worked with two others to come up with a lesson plan for our students that discusses the impact of having a good or bad digital footprint. The students start by googling themselves. Then, they play a board game that tests their knowledge on what to do in digital situations that could harm one's digital footprint. Finally, they get the chance to research their favorite celebrity and determine if they see mostly good or bad things about them online. By having my students look themselves and others up online, I am promoting digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the internet because they are determining if their behavior is right and just online.
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:
participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning.
exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others.
evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning.
contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community.
For one of my badges, I watched an hour long webinar put on by Google Edu that discussed digital citizenship. In this webinar, they paid particular attention to the "Be Internet Awesome" campaign. After learning about this campaign, I realized that it follows this standard quite well. By watching this webinar, I was participating in a global learning community to explore creative application of technology to improve student learning. This campaign definitely improves student learning because it teaches them how to be smart, safe, brave, and alert online.
For one of the class preps, I participated in a Twitter chat with the future teachers in other W200 classes. In this Twitter chat, we had to answer 3 different questions that related to digital citizenship. During my discussion, we had a helpful talk about ways to incorporate digital citizenship lessons into our everyday science, math, or elementary classrooms. This Twitter chat allowed me to improve my professional practice by promoting the effective use of digital tools and resources. I was able to improve my professional practice because I was communicating with other professionals about how we can improve our own classrooms through technology and incorporating technology. Also, since it was a chat that involved a discussion back and forth, I participated in a local learning community to explore how technology (involving digital citizenship) to improve the learning of my future students.
